Former director Vici Grimes was one of the pioneers of farm to school in Oklahoma. Vici met with Whitmore Farms in Coyle, OK and built a relationship with them. She purchased asparagus, strawberries, squash, cucumbers, and cantaloupe along with sweet corn and okra.
Stillwater Public Schools also partnered with the Oklahoma State University Food and Agricultural Products Center and the Great Plains RC&D to be a test site for a no-till whole wheat flour used for baking.
Comments from the staff include that it is the best and freshest whole wheat flour they have ever baked with. Farm to School partnered with Stillwater Schools and OSU student Ryan Fidler for his Master’s Thesis in Nutrition. The project introduced the very hands-on interactive VEGGIE U learning lab at Richmond Elementary School, in Dee Dee Liebeneau 5th grade science classroom. Data showed that hands-on experiential interaction with growing & tasting fruits & vegetables can help increase consumption.
Krista Neal, current child nutrition director is a firm believer in farm to school and supporting local farmers and continues to participate in the program. Fun Farm to School activities took place with the summer feeding program 2010 at Skyline Elementary where students got to taste locally grown blackberries, grilled squash, onions & potatoes and also made plant pots and then filled with a tomato or pepper plant to take home to grow.
