Participating Schools

Shawnee Public Schools has participated in the farm to school program since it was piloted in 2004. They also purchase directly from Crow Farms, a local farm in Shawnee. Extra activities included taking the entire food service staff out to Crow Farms to see the farm, meet the growers, and do some yummy taste testing. Now when the schools receive produce from Crow Farms, they can share with the children that they have been to the farm and know the people that grew the food they are eating.

In September, Chef Harry, spokesperson for the National Watermelon Promotion Board, came to Oklahoma to provide three fun events at various schools for farm to school. Shawnee Middle School was one event location and students got to meet Chef Harry and listen to great ideas about nutrition, see watermelon made into salsa, cakes, cookies, pizza and breakfast parfaits along with some students getting to help and all students getting to taste.
