Shawnee Public Schools has participated in the Farm to School Program since it was piloted in 2004. Extra activities included taking the entire food service staff to Crow Farms to see the farm, meet the growers, and do some yummy taste testing.

In September 2007, Chef Harry, spokesperson for the National Watermelon Promotion Board, came to Oklahoma to provide three fun events for Farm to School. Shawnee Middle School was one event location and the students got to meet Chef Harry and listen to great ideas about nutrition, see watermelon made into salsa, cakes, cookies, pizza, and breakfast parfaits along with some of the students getting to help and all of the students getting to taste.

Horace Mann, Jefferson, and Will Rogers Elementary have received the Healthier US School Challenge Gold Award. US Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan visited in 2010 meeting with local farmers, students and school and agency officials. Locally grown strawberries and lettuce were served to 3rd graders and farmers with PeachCrest Farms, Crow Farms and Perennial Produce attended as well.
