Growers
THE FarmOriginally employed as computer professionals, Vicky & Joe purchased their 180 acre farm in southeastern Oklahoma in 2002. They have certified 20 of those acres as organic and have been developing the farm’s infrastructure, building soil and adding two greenhouses. THE Farm grows a variety of produce specializing in strawberries and onions. The Townsends have been developing season extension growing methods through the use of unheated greenhouses, plasticulture and a homemade growth chamber for seed germination. A field day was held at their farm to share their farming experiences with season extension and its importance for a successful farm to school program. Joe & Vicky will begin selling crops to their local school in 2009. |
